Abstract

The research entitled Competencies Essential for the Employment of Persons with Physical Disabilities According to the Opinions of Private Sector Enterprises in Phuket Province aimed to: (1) examine the level of importance of competencies required for the employment of persons with physical disabilities as perceived by private sector enterprises in Phuket Province, and (2) compare the opinions of different types of private sector enterprises regarding the competencies considered important for employing persons with physical disabilities. The findings revealed that private sector enterprises placed the highest importance on competencies related to morality, ethics, responsibility, and work discipline, followed by professional skills and job-specific competencies. These findings indicate that persons with physical disabilities who possess high levels of core competencies, functional competencies, and personal competencies—particularly in ethics, responsibility, and the ability to work effectively with others—are more likely to gain employment opportunities and acceptance within organizations. Furthermore, the comparison of opinions among different types of private sector enterprises showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the overall importance assigned to competencies. However, each type of enterprise emphasized specific competencies according to its job characteristics and business context, especially functional competencies that directly correspond to organizational missions and operational requirements. The study also found that employment opportunities for persons with physical disabilities depend more on the alignment between an individual's competencies and job requirements than on physical limitations alone. Therefore, the findings highlight the necessity of developing the competencies of persons with disabilities in accordance with the demands of labor markets across different business sectors. Such development would contribute to increased employment opportunities, greater economic and social participation, and the sustainable improvement of quality of life for persons with disabilities.
